Growing up as an adolescent in the 1990's, I was usually bombarded with Chia Pet commercials during the Holiday season. While some Chia Pet advertisements still surface even today, the plant/paper weight hybrid of yesteryear has gone by the wasteside of useless gifts.
The new product that has taken over that title: The Snuggie.
It sounds like a new brand of diaper, but really the Snuggie is a long tunic -- for those people who like to move around while they are trying to stay warm. Snuggies innovate the idea of "blankets" or "throws" by adding one monumental variation -- arms! I had no idea that the regular, run-of-the-mill blanket was so confining, like a straight jacket.
I never thought I would live to see it, but bring on the backlash against blankets. They've had their fun in the sun as the traditional means of staying warm. They've been there through two World Wars, nearly 44 U.S. Presidents, and seven American Idols, but it looks like it's time for them to step down. Soon, people will be cozying up in their bed with a Snuggie. People won't be buying comforters, they'll be laying out Snuggies on their bed. Even Linus' of the Peanuts gang will be updated in Christmas specials to be carrying around a blue one.
My theory: What if the Snuggie is simply a conspiracy against the blanket? Perhaps, a cult even? Take a look at 1:02 of the commercial, and you'll see exactly what I mean.
If you've been to a movie theatre over the past couple of months, you've probably seen this commercial:
I love it. I think it's catchy and joyous. It makes me want to go by a Coke right now (only out of a bottle -- the best way to drink a Coke).
However, doesn't this commercial strangely mirror the preview for Cloverfield? Weren't you, too, expecting the guy to go up to the roof and for the Statue of Liberty to come flying at him?
Maybe I was the only one.
