I got to see Camera Obscura last night at Mr. Small's theatre in Millvale, Pa. Mr. Small's was the final stop on their tour in support of My Maudlin Career.
I experienced music nirvana three times: once, when they covered Bruce Springsteen's "Tougher than the Rest" (two of my favorite artists together at last); secondly, when they performed "Lloyd, I'm Ready to Be Heartbroken," with the celestial organ sounds reverberating in Mr. Small's (a church converted into an Indie Rock venue); thirdly, when I snagged the set list.
Here's the group playing "Lloyd" on a stop in Mexico City:
While listening to the XMU station on my way home from work, DJ Josiah touted that the next band he was about to play was on Brian Williams' IPod, a band the "Nightly News" anchor psyched himself up with before attending the White House Correspondence Dinner a few weeks ago.
When a soft female voice started singing "Spent a week in a dusty library," I gasped, surprised to discover that Williams and I have the same taste in music: the band being Camera Obscura with the song "French Navy" (a band and song I have endorsed on this blog before).
How did Josiah know this? Through Williams' blog called "The Daily Nightly," where the anchor often shares his opinions on the latest in music, pop culture, and other musings. The blog has been around since 2005, with Williams writing its inaugural post about the revelation of "Deep Throat."
After reading some of his posts on music, I realized that Williams and I would be the perfect couple to pair up in a sequel to Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist. Other bands he enjoys are: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Bob Dylan, Interpol, The Clash, and Smashing Pumpkins (I am, however, ignoring his Avril Lavigne interest).
Camera Obscura's latest album My Maudlin Career has become my official soundtrack for spring, especially with their new single "French Navy" which I feel evokes a Pipettes/Go-Go's quality.
When I first heard that Camera Obscura was from Glasgow, Scotland, I immediately thought of ABBA's "Super Trouper" when they sing, "When I called you last night from Glasgow." By some form of serendipity or synergy, Camera Obscura has a cover version of "Super Trouper." I may have died and gone to Heaven.
